Nem tudtam, hogy mi az, amit érzek: öröm vagy fájdalom. Éreztem, hogy rohanni kellene, kirohanni a mezők közé s végigkiáltani rajtuk riadó szóval, hogy öltözzenek csupa virágba, mert újra magyar föld lettek! Az erdőig szaladni és felverni a fákat, hogy énekeljenek a boldogságtól! De ugyanakkor meg kellett volna állni szemközt fordulva a déli dombvonallal, levett kalappal s lehajtott fejjel. Nem lehetett csinálni semmi mást, csak állni az ablakban mozdulatlanul, nézni északnak, keletnek, délnek, átölelni egyetlen pillantással a testvérdombokat, átölelni és egybeszorítani őket, hogy ne tudjanak egymástól soha elszakadni.
