To the extent that people have given up their individual sense of self in servile humility, their professional sense of self has increased. In my time, the vast majority of people tolerated without a murmur the systematic deprivation by the State, the Office, and the Institution, of the God-ordained privileges of their individuality. Did they tolerate the soulless, vicious, and rigid order of a civilization telling them how to live, dress, entertain, and enjoy themselves, indeed, in this age, even telling them how and when to walk the streets. They were forbidden to think and speak on command. They were forbidden to have an artificially inflated power interest, called Party, Office or Principle, interfere in every aspect of their private lives, to shape and mould their character and thought. All this was tolerated without a word, without contradiction. The individual could be trained by all; he obeyed in silence. But this same tamed, domesticated man, deprived of all human prerogatives of individuality, would thunder if anyone dared to criticise the profession to which he belonged. You could say what you liked about the coppersmith, and he would bear it with taciturnity and blinking patience; but if you dared to speak of the Coppersmith's Trade, all the coppersmiths of the world would immediately start shouting and protesting. It was the same with clerks, writers, doctors. A dentist silently tolerated being called stupid in private, but immediately appealed to the World Dental Association if anyone dared to prove publicly that dentists were not the most perfect, blameless people on earth. The individual pocketed everything, the profession gnashed its teeth. I experienced this too.

În măsura în care oamenii au renunțat la sentimentul lor individual de sine în umilință servilă, sentimentul lor profesional de sine a crescut. Pe vremea mea, marea majoritate a oamenilor au tolerat fără un murmur privarea sistematică de către stat, birou, instituție, a privilegiilor individualității lor ordonate de Dumnezeu. Au tolerat ordinea fără suflet, vicioasă și rigidă a unei civilizații care le spunea cum să trăiască, să se îmbrace, să se distreze și să se simtă bine, ba chiar, în această epocă, le spunea chiar cum și când să meargă pe stradă. Le era interzis să gândească și să vorbească la comandă. Li s-a interzis să aibă un interes de putere umflat artificial, numit Partid, Funcție sau Principiu, care să intervină în fiecare aspect al vieții lor private, pentru a le forma și modela caracterul și gândirea. Toate acestea erau tolerate fără un cuvânt, fără o contradicție. Individul putea fi instruit de toți; el se supunea în tăcere. Dar același om îmblânzit, domesticit, dresat, lipsit de toate prerogativele umane ale individualității, ar începe să tune dacă cineva ar îndrăzni să critice profesia căreia îi aparținea. Puteai să spui ce voiai despre fierarul de cupru, iar el suporta cu taciturnitate și răbdare clipitoare; dar dacă îndrăzneai să vorbești despre Meseria de Fierar de cupru, imediat începeau să strige și să protesteze toți fierarii de cupru din lume. La fel era și cu funcționarii, scriitorii, medicii. Un dentist tolera în tăcere să fie făcut prost în particular, dar apela imediat la Asociația Mondială a Dentiștilor dacă cineva îndrăznea să demonstreze public că dentiștii nu erau cei mai perfecți și ireproșabili oameni de pe pământ. Individul a încasat totul, profesia a scrâșnit din dinți. Am trăit și eu asta.
