Life - sometimes it feels that way - is almost unbearable. You are living in a moment of turning of fate and turning of the ages, when everything is shaking and changing, traditions, moral laws, known ways of life. It's as if you no longer live in houses, but in the jungle of life, where the sky is always roaring and the storm raging. And you hope for change. You trust that one day all the tempers in hearts will burn to ashes, the soot and bitter smoke that spreads in hearts will dissipate. Sunlight will once again fall on the human landscape. The sea will be blue and the fruit of the trees fragrant. Change brings peace.
Change will come naturally, when the time is right: emotions will be put to rest. But one thing will not change: human nature. No morality, no reasoning, no miracle can truly and profoundly change human nature. Those who bring and live the change will be human again, and therefore unjust, impatient, cruel, greedy and lustful. Modification, change in all things human, will come, but man will not change. All attempts at education have failed so far. Sometimes, a very strong character and individuality, for a short time, forty to fifty years of life, can validate the moral claims of the great human educators in practice. These brief periods are sporadic and rare in the history of the human race. It is the best that man can do. But it is a very rare phenomenon. Man remains what he was. Human matter is hopeless, fire and lye cannot change it.

Az élet – néha így érzed – csaknem elviselhetetlen. Sorsforduló és korforduló pillanatában élsz, mikor minden reng és változik, a hagyományok, az erkölcsi törvények, az ismert életformák. Mintha már nem is házakban laknál, hanem az élet őserdejében, ahol állandóan zeng az ég és dúl a vihar. S a változásban reménykedel. Bízol abban, hogy egyszer hamuvá ég a szívekben minden indulat, a pernye és a keserű füst, mely a szívekben terjeng, eloszlik. Megint napfény hull az emberi tájra. A tenger kék lesz és a fák gyümölcse illatos. A változás elhozza a békét.
A változás természetesen bekövetkezik majd, ha itt lesz az ideje: az indulatok megpihennek. De egy nem változik: az emberi természet. Nincs erkölcs, érvelés, csoda, mely igazán és mélyen változtatni tudna az emberi természeten. Akik a változást hozzák és élik, megint csak emberek lesznek, tehát igazságtalanok, türelmetlenek, kegyetlenek, kapzsiak és buják. A változás, minden emberi dolgok változása, elkövetkezik, de az ember nem változik meg. Minden nevelő kísérlet csődöt mondott eddig. Néha, egy nagyon erős jellem és egyéniség, rövid időre, negyven-ötven életév idejére, érvényesíteni tudja a nagy emberi nevelők erkölcsi követeléseit a gyakorlatban. Ezek a rövid időszakok szórványosak és ritkák az emberi fajta történetében. Ez a legtöbb, amit ember tehet. De ez nagyon ritka tünemény. Az ember marad, aki volt. Az emberi anyag reménytelen, a tűz és a lúg sem tudja másítani.

Viața - uneori așa pare - este aproape insuportabilă. Trăiești într-un moment de întoarcere a destinului și de maturizare, când totul se zguduie și se schimbă, tradițiile, legile morale, modurile de viață cunoscute. Este ca și cum nu ai mai trăi în case, ci în jungla vieții, unde cerul este mereu învolburat și furtuna se dezlănțuie. Și speri la schimbare. Ai încredere că într-o zi toate temperaturile din inimi se vor face scrum, cenușa zburătoare și fumul amar care străbate inimile se vor risipi. Lumina soarelui va cădea din nou pe peisajul uman. Marea va fi albastră și fructele copacilor parfumate. Schimbarea aduce pace.
Schimbarea va veni în mod natural, la momentul potrivit: emoțiile vor fi lăsate deoparte. Dar un lucru nu se va schimba: natura umană. Nici o morală, nici un raționament, nici un miracol nu poate schimba cu adevărat și profund natura umană. Cei care aduc și trăiesc schimbarea vor fi din nou oameni și, prin urmare, nedrepți, nerăbdători, cruzi, lacomi și pofticioși. Modificarea, schimbarea în toate lucrurile umane, va veni, dar omul nu se va schimba. Toate încercările de educare au eșuat până acum. Uneori, un caracter și o personalitate foarte puternică poate, pentru o scurtă perioadă de timp, patruzeci sau cincizeci de ani de viață, să pună în practică pretențiile morale ale marilor educatori umani. Aceste perioade scurte sunt sporadice și rare în istoria rasei umane. Este cel mai bun lucru pe care omul îl poate face. Dar este un fenomen foarte rar. Omul rămâne ceea ce a fost. Materia umană este fără speranță, focul și varul nu o pot schimba.
