Markomba rejtettem az eszem; azóta boldogan, emelt fővel járok, csak a kezemet lógatom fáradtan, az eszem súlya lehúzza. Látod, ez a kicsiny, kemény bőrű, erekkel átszőtt, ráncok barázdálta, duzzadó erezetű, öt ujjal zárható tok most az eszem tokja; de jó, hogy ide menekíthettem, ahol senki se gyanítja! És felbecsülhetetlen előny, hogy két kezem is van. Bárkitől megkérdezhetem: melyik kezemben van az eszem; nem fogja kitalálni, mert ha összekulcsolom a kezem, hipp-hopp, máris átcsúsztattam az eszemet egyik markomból a másikba.
