Goods that are hard to get injure one's activities. For this reason the sage is concerned with the belly and not the eyes, Therefore he rejects the one but accepts the other."

"The five colors blind the eye. The five tones deafen the ear. The five flavors dull the taste. Racing and hunting madden the mind. Precious things lead one astray. Therefore the sage is guided by what he feels and not by what he sees. He lets go of that and chooses this."

"Colour's five hues from th' eyes their sight will take; Music's five notes the ears as deaf can make; The flavours five deprive the mouth of taste; The chariot course, and the wild hunting waste Make mad the mind; and objects rare and strange, Sought for, men's conduct will to evil change. Therefore the sage seeks to satisfy (the craving of) the belly, and not the (insatiable longing of the) eyes. He puts from him the latter, and prefers to seek the former."

Yes: He leaves 'that' aside, and attends to 'this'."

"Colors blind the eye. Sounds deafen the ear. Flavors numb the taste. Thoughts weaken the mind. Desires wither the heart. The Master observes the world but trusts his inner vision. He allows things to come and go. His heart is open as the sky."

Greed for rare objects is hurtful to the actions of man. "رنگ ها چشم را كور مي كنند. صداها گوش را كر مي كنند. مزه ها چشايي را كند مي كنند. افكار، ذهن را ضعيف مي كنند. آرزوها موجب پژمردن دل مي شوند. فرزانه جهان را مشاهده مي كند و به ديد دروني خويش اعتماد مي كند. او اجازه مي دهد اتفاقات آن طور كه بايد رخ دهند. قلب او همچون آسمان باز و گسترده است."

"La vue des couleurs aveugle les yeux de l’hom­me. L’audition des sons lui fait perdre l’ouïe. La gustation des saveurs use son goût. "Les cinq couleurs émoussent la vue de l'homme. Les cinq notes (de musique) émoussent l'ouïe de l'homme. Les cinq saveurs émoussent le goût de l'homme. Les courses violentes, l'exercice de la chasse égarent le cœur de l'homme. Les biens d'une acquisition difficile poussent l'homme à des actes qui lui nuisent. De là vient que le saint home s'occupe de son intérieur et ne s'occupe pas de ses yeux. C'est pourquoi il renonce à ceci et adopte cela."

"Les cinq couleurs aveuglent l'homme. Les cinq notes assourdissent ses oreilles. Les cinq saveurs rendent sa bouche insensible. Les courses et la chasse égarent son esprit. Les richesses l'empêchent de progresser. Ainsi le Sage tourne son regard en lui-même et, loin du tumulte et des passions, exerce librement son choix."

"Les cinq couleurs aveuglent Les cinq notes rendent sourd Les cing saveurs émoussent le goût. Courses et chasses excitent la bestialité Biens précieux entravent le progrès. Aussi le sage Se concentre dans l’abdomen* Et non dans l’œil. Rejette toute influence Et demeure centré. (le ventre et non l’estomac ; « l’océan de l’énergie » où les souffles s’harmonisent et y trouvent leur plénitude. La pratique de la méditation, du Tai Chi ou des arts martiaux est basée sur une respiration abdominale qui permet à l’être humain de trouver son centre de gravité)"

"Az erős fény megvakítja az embert. Az erős hang az ember fülét süketté teheti. Az erős fűszer a nyelv ízlelő képességét eltompítja. Lóverseny és vadászat elvadítják az emberi vágyakat. Nehezen elérhető drágaságok az embert gonoszra csábítják. Ezért a bölcs a lelke sugallatát követi és nem a szem kívánságait. Ez utóbbit figyelmen kívül hagyja és az előbbit gondozza."

"Látást az öt szín tompít, hallást az öt hang tompít, ízlést az öt íz tompít, a vágtatás, vadászat megbolondít, a nehezen elérhető mind bűnbe lódít. Ezért a bölcs nem a szemét, inkább a gyomrát tömi, neki nem a távoli kell, hanem a közeli."

"Az öt szín vakká teszi az ember szemét, az öt hang süketté teszi az ember fülét, az öt íz eltompítja az ember ínyét. A sok lovaglás és vadászat megbolondítja az ember szívét. A nehezen szerezhető vagyontárgyak mozgásában gátolják az embert. Ezért a bölcs ember a bensőjével törődik s nem a szemével. Elveti tehát az "azt", s az "ezt" választja."

"Sắc năm màu làm ta choáng mắt, Thanh năm cung ngây ngất lỗ tai. Năm mùi tê lưỡi mềm sai, Ruổi rong săn bắn, lòng người hóa điên. Của hiếm có ngả nghiêng nhân đức, Khinh giác quan, giữ chắc lòng son. Thánh nhân hiểu lẽ mất còn."
