Neboť jen nebude-li roztrpčován, nebude se cítit roztrpčen. Proto moudrý má vědomí sebe, aniž pomýšlí na obdiv, má lásku k sobě, aniž pomýšlí na pocty. Podržuje jedno a odmítá druhé."

"Nebojí-li se lid mocných, přichází moc. Nedotýkejte se jeho obydlí, nepohrdejte jeho životem. Kdo nepřezírá (lid), nebude přezírán (lidem). Proto moudrý člověk, který zná sebe, sebe nevystavuje. Miluje sebe a sebe nevyvyšuje. Zamítá samolibost a dává přednost nevyvyšování."

"Wer nicht mehr mit Unglück rechnet, vergeht durch Unglück. Nicht sich wenig glauben; Nicht sich klein glauben; Nicht glauben, und es ist nicht. All-so: Der Vollendete kennt sich, ohne sich zu zeigen; genügt sich, ohne sich zu überschätzen; meidet dieses; müht jenes."

"Fürchtet das Volk nicht das Furchtbare, dann kommt das Furchtbarste: Man mache nicht eng seine Wohnung, nicht widrig sein Leben! Nur weil man es nicht widrig macht, Deshalb wird es nicht widrig. Daher: Der heilige Mensch erkennt sich selbst, aber sieht nicht sich selbst an, liebt sich selbst, aber schätzt nicht sich selbst hoch. Darum läßt er jenes und ergreift dieses."

"Wenn die Menschen das Grauen nicht fürchten, überfällt sie das Grauen. Aber man trage das Grauen nicht in ihre Heimstatt und mache ihnen das Leben nicht verdrießlich. Nie werden sie verdrießlich, wenn man ihnen das Leben nicht vergällt. Obwohl der Weyse seinen Wert kennt, trägt er ihn nicht zur Schau. Obwohl er um seine Würde weiß, beansprucht er keineEhre. Er weiß zwar um seine Möglichkeiten, bleibt aber in seinen Grenzen."

"Das eingeborene Volk soll man nicht verängstigen durch Schreckmittel. Die Großen, wahrlich, sie übertreiben ihre Schreckensherrschaft. Man befreie von Beschränkungen seine Dörfer in bezug auf das Wohnen! Man befreie von Beschränkungen seine Dörfer in bezug auf das Lebensgebahren! Die Helfer sollen Betreuer sein und nicht Unterdrücker! Richtig verhalten sie sich, wenn sie nicht unterdrücken. Richtig verhält sich als Walter ein Sin: Er erkennt sich selbst, aber er will nicht glänzen. Er liebt sich selbst, aber er sucht nicht Ehre für sich. - Die Alten sagten: "Tut ab, was vergangen, haltet euch an die Gegenwart!""

"Wenn ihr euch vor dem Fürchterlichen nicht fürchtet, wird das Ungeheuerliche eintreten. Keinem sei seine Wohnung zu eng, keinem sein Leben zu bescheiden; wer sich nicht eingeschränkt fühlt, ist auch nicht beengt. So erkennt sich der Weise selbst, ohne sich lange zu betrachten; so schätzt er sich selbst, ohne sich zu überheben. Das eine ergibt sich aus dem andern."

"Das Volk hat keine Angst vor dem Erlöschen, bis dann das große Erlöschen kommt. Das Nichts wohnt sozusagen vertraut bei ihm, und das Nichts verschmäht sein sogenanntes Leben. Jedoch wendet Euch ja nicht von ihm ab! Denn es wendet sich auch nicht von Euch ab. Deshalb sieht der Heilige, der sich selbst kennt, nicht auf sich selbst. Bei aller Eigenliebe macht er mit sich nicht viel daher. Darum meidet er das eine und wählt das andere."

"FÜRCHTET DAS Volk keine strafende Strenge, Bringt ihm vernichtende Strenge den Tod. Keinem sei drum seine Wohnung zu enge, Keinem das Dasein bebürdete Not. Macht man verdrießlich des Daseins Genuß, Wird der Verdrossene selber Verdruß. Weise des Weisen ist: sich zu erkennen, Nicht sich zu spiegeln in dem, was er ist, Liebend-bewußt sich sein eigen zu nennen, Ohne die Selbstsucht, die fordert und mißt. Jenes verschmäht er und dies hält er fest: So ist die Bahn, die er niemals verläßt."

"When the people do not fear what is dreadful, Then what is greatly dreadful will fall upon them. Do not reduce the living space of their dwellings. Do no oppress their lives. It is because you do not oppress them that they are not oppressed. Therefore the sage knows himself but does not show himself. He loves himself but does not exalt himself. Therefore he rejects the one but accepts the other."

"When men lack a sense of awe, there will be disaster. Do not intrude in their homes. Do not harass them at work. If you do not interfere, they will not weary of you. Therefore the sage knows himself but makes no show, Has self-respect but is not arrogant. He lets go of that and chooses this."

"When the people do not fear what they ought to fear, that which is their great dread will come on them. Let them not thoughtlessly indulge themselves in their ordinary life; let them not act as if weary of what that life depends on. It is by avoiding such indulgence that such weariness does not arise. Therefore the sage knows (these things) of himself, but does not parade (his knowledge); loves, but does not (appear to set a) value on, himself. And thus he puts the latter alternative away and makes choice of the former."

"When people have no fear of force, Then (as is the common practice) great force descends upon them. Despise not their dwellings, Dislike not their progeny. Because you do not dislike them, You will not be disliked yourself. Therefore the Sage knows himself, but does not show himself, Loves himself, but does not exalt himself. Therefore he rejects the one (force) and accepts the other (gentility)."

"WHEN the people no longer fear your power, It is a sign that a greater power is coming. Interfere not lightly vith their dwelling, Nor lay heavy burdens upon their livelihood. Only when you cease to weary them, They will cease to be wearied of you. Therefore, the Sage knows himself, But makes no show of himself, Loves himself, But does not exalt himself. He prefers what is within to what is without."

"If the people do not fear the dreadful, the great dreadful will come, surely. Let them not deem their lives narrow. Let them not deem their lot wearisome. When it is not deemed wearisome, then it will not be wearisome. Therefore the holy man knows himself but does not display himself. He holds himself dear but does not honor himself. Thus he discards the latter and chooses the former."

"Never mind if the people are not intimidated by your authority. A Mightier Authority will deal with them in the end. "When the people are not in awe of your majesty then great majesty has been achieved. Do not restrict where they can live do not tire them out by taxing what they live on. Simply do not tire them and they will not tire of you. And so, the Wise Person: Knows himself does not make a show of himself. Loves himself does not exalt himself. Yes, he leaves 'that' aside, and attends to 'this.'"

"Upon those who defy authority It shall be visited, But not behind prison walls Nor through oppression of their kin; Men sanely led Are not led by duress. To know yourself and not show yourself, To think well of yourself and not tell of yourself, Be that your no and your yes."

"If people do not fear the awesome, something more awful is imminent. But do not be disrespectful of their dwellings. If not oppressed, they will not press. That is why the Sage knows himself but does not reveal himself. He has self-respect, but does not seek recognition. Hence, he rejects one and takes the other."

"When people no longer fear authority a greater authority will appear don't restrict where people dwell don't repress how people live if they aren't repressed they won't protest thus the sage knows himself but doesn't reveal himself he loves himself but doesn't exalt himself thus he picks this over that"

"When they lose their sense of awe, people turn to religion. When they no longer trust themselves, they begin to depend upon authority. Therefore the Master steps back so that people won't be confused. He teaches without a teaching, so that people will have nothing to learn."

"If the people do not dread majesty, Then great majesty will come to them. Let them guard the innermost of their dwellings, Let them press towards the innermost of their life. The Master indeed is not bound, That is why he is not bound. That is how the self-controlled man knows the Self and perceives the not-Self. He loves the Self, and honours the not-Self. Therefore he passes away from the latter and takes hold of the former."

"When people are not in awe of power, Power becomes great. Do not intrude into their homes, Do not make their lives weary. If you do not weary them, They will not becoem weary of you. Therefore the Sage Has self-knowledge without self-display, Self-love without personal pride, Rejects one, accepts the other."

"When the people are not awed by authority, then great authority is attained. Their homes are not small to them, their livelihood not tiresome. Just because they do not tire of it, it is not tiresome to them. Therefore sages know themselves but do not see themselves. They take care of themselves but do not exalt themselves. "When the people lack a proper sense of awe, then some awful visitationwill descend upon them. Do not constrict their living space; Do not press down on their means of livelihood. He accepteth the former and rejecteth the latter."

"When the people fear no power, Then great power has indeed arrived. Do not disturb them in their dwellings, Do not weary them in their living. It is because you do not weary (pu yen) them, That they are not wearied of you. Therefore the sage knows himself (tzu chih), But does not see himself (tzu chien). He loves himself (tzu ai), But does not exalt himself (tzu kuei). Therefore he leaves that and takes this."

"When the common people no longer fear terror, A great terror is imminent. Do not constrict their living space; Do not oppress their livelihood. "Cuando la gente ya no teme tu poder es señal de que estállegando un gran poder. No interfieras a la ligera en sus hogares, ni les impongas pesadascargas. Ne trouvez pas trop étroite votre demeure natale, ne vous dégoûtez pas de la condition dans laquelle vous êtes né. (Restez ce que vous êtes et où vous êtes. L’effort pour chercher mieux, vous perdrait peut-être.). On ne se dégoûte pas, à condition de ne pas vouloir se dégoûter. (Le dégoût est tou­jours volontaire, provenant de ce qu’on a comparé sa situation à une autre, et préféré l’autre.) Le Sage connaît sa valeur, mais ne se montre pas (n’éprouve pas le besoin d’exhiber sa valeur). Il s’aime, mais ne cherche pas à se faire estimer. Il discerne, adoptant ceci et rejetant cela (d’après les lumières de sa sagesse)."

"Lorsque le peuple ne craint pas les choses redoutables, ce qu'il y a de plus redoutable (la mort) vient fondre sur lui. Gardez-vous de vous trouver à l'étroit dans votre demeure, gardez-vous de vous dégoûter de votre sort. Je ne me dégoûte point du mien, c'est pourquoi il ne m'inspire point de dégoût. De là vient que le Saint se connaît lui-même et ne se met point en lumière; il se ménage et ne se prise point. C'est pourquoi il laisse ceci et adopte cela."

"Si ton pouvoir n'est plus respecté par le peuple, c'est qu'un pouvoir plus fort survient et que ta fin est proche. N'oblige pas le peuple à vivre à l'étroit, ne restreins pas le champ de son labeur, ne l'oppresse pas. Il restera paisible. Ainsi le Sage se connaît lui-même, et il vit dans l'isolement. Il est en paix avec lui-même. Sans aucune vanité. C'est pourquoi en tout il peut faire librement son choix. Et c'est dans la profondeur et non dans l'extérieur qu'il puise sa connaissance. C'est dans le dedans et non dans le dehors qu'il puise son amour."

"Si le peuple ne craint plus le pouvoir C’est qu’un pouvoir plus grand approche. Ne pas limiter son espace vital Ne pas l’empêcher de subsister Ne pas le pressurer Et le peuple ne se lassera pas. Ainsi le sage se conduit lui-même Mais ne se montre pas. Il se respecte lui-même Mais ne s’enorgueillit pas. Il refuse ceci et accepte cela."

"Si le peuple n'a pas une crainte respectueuse pour les grandeurs, la majesté suprême l'atteindra. Ne vous trouvez pas à l'étroit dans votre demeure, ne prenez pas en dégoût ce qui est votre existence. Il suffit de ne pas mépriser sa condition pour ne pas s'en lasser. Le Saint-Homme se connaît sans s'observer; il s'aime sans se priser. C'est pourquoi il rejette ceci et adopte cela."

"מתי בשם משמעת את העם בכוח מכריחים את־התוצאה ההפוכה בדרך־כלל רואים שינאה תהיה תשובה נוגדת לכפייה מתי שלא על פחד מנהיגות בנויה היא מזניקה לאופקים גבוהים שליט חכם מבין איזה כוח ש למנהיגות הוא לא מבליט, לא מגלה את־שלטונו לא מאבד כבודו ולא מקדש עצמו במקום שטויות הוא מעדיף את היעילות"

"Ha a nép nem fél a hatalomtól, a hatalom akkor tökéletes. Ne szorítsátok ki hajlékaiból, ne rontsátok meg az életet. Ha nem nyomjátok el a népet, nem fog megvetni titeket. Ezért a bölcs ismeri magát, de nem ismerteti, szereti magát, de nem szeretteti, neki nem a távoli kell, hanem a közeli."

"Ha a népnek nem kell félnie a hatalomtól, akkor érkezik el az igazán nagy hatalom.
