The man who, in armor and a manner befitting the rank of man, wishes to stand his ground in the cruel battle of life, does well if he educates himself not only to impartiality and unquestioning justice but to pride without fear, to contempt of all human treachery and danger, to a superior outlook on all human situations. By superiority I do not mean a timid indifference, but the coolness of a man of reason and character in the face of all the assaults of life. Human meanness, misery, the tangle of accidents and tragedies, the contingencies that lurk around us at every moment to overthrow what we have built up in ourselves or the world by the means of our art, to disturb the tranquillity of our souls, to contaminate the relative contentment of our lives, to rob us of what we have rightly acquired: all this cannot be looked at from above, with sufficient indifference, coldness, and superiority.
We have no right to remain cold and superior only when we see innocent people being abused and tortured. At such times, man, do not attempt, from the pinnacles of some outlook, philosophy, or attitude, to look on human misery with motionless coldness. In your case, remain distinguished, cold, callous, and haughty. In the affliction of others, feel, fervent, act - do not shrink from being a burden to the powerful, beg, bribe, if need be, do what you can to help. In the cause of others, you cannot be impartially and coldly wise, nor proud, nor arrogant. The pain and humiliation of the innocent oblige you to leave the cliffs of your rest. Then, only then, you have no right to remain lonely and proud. Remember this well.

Az ember, aki vértezetten és az ember rangjához illő módon akarja megállani helyét az élet kegyetlen ütközetében, helyesen cselekszik, ha nemcsak pártatlanságra és föltétlen igazságosságra, hanem félelem nélkül való büszkeségre, mindenfajta emberi ármánynak és veszélynek megvetésére, mindenféle emberi helyzetnek fölényes szemléletére neveli magát. Fölény alatt nem a nyegle közönyt értem, hanem az értelmes és jellemes ember hidegvérét az élet mindenfajta támadásával szemben. Az emberi aljasságot, nyomorúságot, a balesetek és tragédiák szövevényét, az eshetőségeket, melyek minden pillanatban ólálkodnak körülöttünk, hogy megdöntsék azt, amit magunkban vagy a világban – művünk eszközeivel – építettünk, megzavarják lelkünk nyugalmát, megfertőzzék életünk viszonylagos elégedettségét, elrabolják azt, amit jogosan szereztünk: mindezt nem lehet eléggé felülről, eléggé közömbösen, hidegen és fölényesen nézni.
Csak akkor nincs jogunk hidegnek és fölényesnek maradni, ha azt látjuk, hogy ártatlanokat gyaláznak és kínoznak. Ilyenkor ne kíséreld meg, ember, valamilyen szemlélet, bölcselet vagy magatartás ormairól, mozdulatlanul és hidegen nézni az emberi nyomorúságot. A magad ügyében maradj előkelő, hideg, érzéketlen és gőgös. A mások nyomorúsága ügyében érezzél, hevüljél, cselekedjél – ne ódzkodjál attól, hogy terhére legyél a hatalmasoknak, kunyerálj, vesztegess, ha kell, kövess el mindent, hogy segíts. A mások ügyében nem lehetsz pártatlanul és hidegen bölcs, sem büszke, sem fölényes. Az ártatlanok fájdalma és megalázottsága kötelez, hogy elhagyd nyugalmad szirtjeit. Akkor, csak akkor, nincs jogod magányosnak és büszkének maradni. Ezt jegyezd meg jól!

Omul care vrea să se impună cu armură în lupta crudă a vieții într-un mod demn de rangul omului are dreptate dacă se educă nu numai spre imparțialitate și dreptate absolută, ci și spre mândrie fără teamă, spre dispreț față de toate trădările și pericolele umane, spre o viziune superioară asupra tuturor situațiilor umane. Prin superioritate nu înțeleg o indiferență timidă, ci răceala unui om de rațiune și caracter în fața tuturor asalturilor vieții. Răutatea umană, mizeria, încâlceala accidentelor și a tragediilor, contingențele care ne pândesc în fiecare clipă pentru a răsturna ceea ce am construit în noi sau în lume prin intermediul artei noastre, pentru a tulbura liniștea sufletelor noastre, pentru a contamina satisfacția relativă a vieții noastre, pentru a ne jefui de ceea ce am dobândit pe bună dreptate: toate acestea nu pot fi privite de sus, cu suficientă indiferență, răceală și superioritate.
Nu avem dreptul să rămânem reci și superiori atunci când vedem oameni nevinovați fiind abuzați și torturați. În astfel de momente, omule, nu încerca, de pe culmile unor perspective, filosofii sau atitudini, să privești mizeria umană cu o răceală nemișcată. În propria ta cauză, rămâi distins, rece, insensibil și arogant. În suferința altora, simte, fervorează, acționează - nu te sfii să fii o povară pentru cei puternici, imploră, mituiește, dacă este nevoie, fă tot ce poți pentru a ajuta. În cauza altora, nu poți fi înțelept imparțial și rece, nici mândru, nici arogant. Durerea și umilința celor nevinovați te obligă să părăsești stâncile odihnei tale. Atunci, numai atunci, nu ai dreptul să rămâi singur și mândru. Amintiți-vă bine acest lucru.
