Are you smug and proud to think that you have read and understood a few books, enriched your knowledge, and learned something about nature or the human spirit? Do you feel "educated", better than the ignorant? Think of the infinite mass of knowledge contained in the sum total of books, and what more would you need to know and read to fully understand a single book? Think of the iron racks that run around the library of the British Museum, how long you would have to live to know something of the material of thought which the books piled up there enclose! But stay in your library, and confess how many books you have not read among those that line your bookshelves, and how many, even among those you have read, you have fully understood and followed with all attention. No, "education", when it comes face to face with the universe of the human spirit, is a barren and vain attitude. Think rather that to understand, to grasp, to feel a single piece of knowledge, demands the fullness of life's efforts. And think, too, how much has been written and thought before you, what oceans of thought rest in the past, and with what a rush of fall in every new age the wealth of human thought flows from the sum of appearances and phenomena. Think of this, and you will be ashamed. Thy brain is finite and childish. But the culture of your character and heart may be full and worthy of man, even if your intellectual knowledge is limited.

Önelégülten és büszkén gondolsz arra, hogy elolvastál és megértettél néhány könyvet, gyarapítottad ismereteid, megtudtál valamit a természetről vagy az emberi szellem tűnődéseiről? Úgy érzed, „művelt" vagy, különb, mint a tudatlanok? Gondolj csak arra, milyen végtelen tömegű ismeretet zár magába a könyvek összessége, s egyetlen könyv teljes megértéséhez mit is kellene ismerni és olvasni még? Gondolj a British Museum könyvtárának körbefutó vasállványaira, milyen hosszan kellene élned, hogy valamit is megismerj a gondolkozás anyagából, melyet az ott felhalmozott könyvek magukba zárnak! De maradj csak könyves szobádban, s valld meg, mily sokféle könyvet nem olvastál azok közül, melyek könyvespolcaidon sorakoznak, s még az olvasottak között is hány akad olyan, melyet teljesen megértettél, s minden figyelemmel követtél. Nem, a „műveltség", mikor farkasszemet néz az emberi szellem világegyetemével, meddő és hiú magatartás csak. Inkább gondolj arra, hogy egyetlen ismeretet megérteni, felfogni, átérezni már az élet erőfeszítéseinek teljességét követeli. És gondolj arra is, mennyi mindent írtak, gondoltak előtted, a gondolatoknak micsoda óceánjai pihennek a múltban, s miféle zuhanással árad minden új korban az emberi gondolatok bősége a jelenségek és tünemények összegéből. Erre gondolj, s elszégyelled magad. Agyad műveltsége véges és gyermekes. De jellemed és szíved műveltsége lehet teljes és emberhez méltó, akkor is, ha szellemi ismereteid korlátozottak.

Ești îngâmfat și mândru să crezi că ai citit și ai înțeles câteva cărți, ți-ai îmbogățit cunoștințele, ai învățat ceva despre natură sau despre spiritul uman? Te simți „educat”, mai bun decât ignoranții? Gândește-te la masa infinită de cunoștințe conținute în suma totală a cărților și ce ar mai trebui să știi și să citești pentru a înțelege pe deplin o singură carte? Gândește-te la rafturile de fier care înconjoară biblioteca Muzeului Britanic, cât de mult ar trebui să trăiești pentru a cunoaște ceva din materialul de gândire pe care cărțile îngrămădite acolo îl cuprind! Dar rămâi în biblioteca ta și mărturisește câte cărți nu ai citit dintre cele care îți tapetează rafturile și câte, chiar dintre cele pe care le-ai citit, le-ai înțeles pe deplin și le-ai urmărit cu toată atenția. Nu, „educația”, atunci când este pusă față în față cu universul spiritului uman, este o atitudine stearpă și zadarnică. Gândește-te mai degrabă că a înțelege, a pricepe, a simți o singură bucată de cunoaștere, cere plenitudinea eforturilor vieții. Și gândește-te, de asemenea, cât de mult s-a scris și s-a gândit înaintea ta, ce oceane de gândire se odihnesc în trecut și cu ce avânt de cădere în fiecare nouă epocă bogăția gândirii umane curge din suma manifestărilor și a fenomenelor. Gândește-te la acestea și îți va fi rușine. Creierul tău este finit și copilăresc. Dar cultura caracterului și a inimii tale poate fi deplină și demnă de om, chiar dacă cunoștințele tale intelectuale sunt limitate.
